The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting plans to introduce a fuel tax, describing them as misleading and insisting that such a measure is not under consideration at this time.
The clarification was made by the Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele, following an interview with ARISE News, during which he explained that introducing a fuel tax after the removal of the petrol subsidy would be insensitive to Nigerians.
“Having removed the fuel subsidy, it would be insensitive for government to impose a fuel tax at this time,” he said.

In a statement addressing the reports, Oyedele said some online publications had misrepresented his remarks, creating the impression that the government planned to introduce a new tax on fuel.
He described the reports as fake news and urged the public to disregard the misleading headlines.
He also encouraged Nigerians to watch the original interview to understand his position on the issue.
The clarification comes amid public concerns over the cost of petrol and the wider economic implications of fuel subsidy removal.
