When people think about global energy giants, oil-rich nations often come to mind. Yet one of the most astonishing facts in the modern energy landscape is that China alone generates nearly one-third of all electricity produced on Earth.


According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and global energy statistics, China now produces more than 9,900 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually, making it the largest electricity-generating nation in the world by a significant margin. In some recent estimates, the country’s annual generation has surpassed 10,000 TWh, accounting for roughly 30 to 33 percent of global electricity output.

To put that figure into perspective, China generates more electricity than the United States, India, Russia and Japan combined. The country has held the position of the world’s largest power producer for more than a decade.


The centre of this enormous electricity system is spread across several key regions. Provinces such as Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong serve as industrial powerhouses with massive electricity demand, while western provinces including Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai host some of the world’s largest hydropower, solar and wind facilities. The Three Gorges Dam in Hubei Province, the world’s largest hydroelectric power station with an installed capacity of 22.5 gigawatts (GW), remains one of the symbols of China’s power ambitions.


China’s overall installed power generation capacity reached approximately 3.35 billion kilowatts, or 3,350 GW, by the end of 2024. This is more than the combined installed capacity of many major economies. Solar power alone accounts for about 890 GW, while wind power contributes more than 520 GW, both ranking among the highest globally.


What makes China’s achievement particularly remarkable is the diversity of its electricity sources. Coal still provides nearly 60 percent of the country’s electricity generation, helping to meet the huge demands of factories, cities and transportation networks. However, China has simultaneously become the world leader in renewable energy deployment.

Massive investments in solar farms across desert regions such as Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, large-scale wind projects in northern China, and hydropower developments in the southwest have transformed the country’s energy mix. Renewables now contribute roughly 35 percent of China’s electricity generation, while nuclear energy and natural gas provide additional support.


Another factor behind China’s electricity dominance is its ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission network. These advanced transmission lines move electricity thousands of kilometres from renewable-rich western regions to densely populated eastern cities. Without this infrastructure, much of the country’s renewable generation would remain stranded far from consumers.


China’s manufacturing sector also plays a major role. As the world’s largest producer of steel, cement, batteries, solar panels and electric vehicles, the country consumes vast amounts of electricity. Rising demand from data centres, artificial intelligence facilities and electric transportation has further accelerated power generation growth.


There are several lessons other countries can learn from China’s approach.


First, long-term planning matters. China has spent decades expanding generation capacity and modernising its electricity grid rather than relying solely on short-term solutions.


Second, grid infrastructure is just as important as power plants. Many countries invest heavily in generation projects but fail to build adequate transmission networks. China’s UHV system demonstrates how strong grid investments can unlock renewable energy potential.


Third, diversification improves energy security. While China still relies heavily on coal, it has simultaneously developed hydropower, solar, wind, nuclear and natural gas resources, reducing dependence on a single source.


Finally, scale and consistency are critical. China’s renewable energy expansion did not happen overnight. It was driven by sustained government policies, investment incentives and industrial development strategies that continued over many years.

Despite facing criticism for its continued coal usage and carbon emissions, China remains one of the most influential players in the global energy transition. Its ability to generate more than one-third of the world’s electricity highlights both the scale of its economy and the unprecedented transformation of its power sector.


For an energy-hungry world searching for reliable and affordable electricity, China’s experience offers a powerful reminder: building a modern energy system requires not only generation capacity but also infrastructure, technology and long-term vision.
